Mosquito Control

Mosquitos are more than just annoying—their bites can carry diseases like West Nile and Zika. They can transmit heartworms to dogs as well. April-October is prime mosquito season, and if you want to be outdoors at all during this time, you’ll be dealing with mosquitos. If your doors and windows aren’t sealed properly, you may have a mosquito problem inside as well. When you start encountering bites on a regular basis, you’ll probably want to address the issue.

Where Mosquitos Breed

The key to preventing mosquito problems is to understand where they breed. Different species prefer different types of standing water to lay their eggs in, but they include the following:

  • Ditches
  • Kiddie pools that aren’t emptied regularly
  • Puddles
  • Tree holes
  • Old tires
  • Buckets
  • Toys
  • Bird baths
  • Rain barrels
  • Fountains
  • Potted plant trays and saucers
  • Plastic covers or tarps

How to Avoid Getting Bitten

You can reduce bites by keeping mosquitoes away from exposed skin. Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks. Tuck your shirt into your pants and your pants into your socks so mosquitoes can’t fly up into clothing. If there’s a mosquito-borne disease warning in effect, stay indoors.

How to Reduce the Number of Mosquitos

The best way to reduce the number of mosquitoes you have to deal with is to remove the places they can lay their eggs. Make sure you don’t have stagnant water anywhere around your house or yard. Regularly change water in pools, bird baths, etc. To keep mosquitoes from coming indoors, cover all gaps in doors and windows and make sure window and door screens are in good working order.

If you have a mosquito problem that can’t be easily solved, you may need additional help. Professional mosquito treatments are time-released and applied every couple of weeks to keep mosquitos away. These professional treatments will eliminate about 90% of mosquitoes.
